Overstay

If you have stayed in Turkey for more than the 90/180 days that are allowed and do not have a residence permit, you should be aware that the following legislation applies:

When you leave, you will be issued a fine. The size of the fine depends on how many days you have overstayed and this is calculated by the passport/immigration control at the airport you are leaving from. This fine can be paid at the airport or at the Turkish embassy in your home country.

If you pay the fine and then need to enter Turkey within 3 months after leaving, you will receive a document upon entry stating that you must apply for a residence permit within 10 days of entry. If you do this, no further action will be taken by the Turkish authorities. If you do not apply for a residence permit, the next time you leave, you will be fined again and possibly banned from entering Turkey for up to 5 years. If you wait 3 months or longer to enter Turkey from the last date of departure and have paid the issued fine, then a new 90/180-day period simply starts.

If you have been banned from entering Turkey for a certain number of months/years, you can contact the Turkish embassy in your home country and perhaps have this decision canceled.

We always recommend that our customers who have a Turkish residence permit contact the English-speaking hotline in Istanbul if you have any questions about the 90/180-day rule or your residence permit. The phone number is +90 312 157 11 22
